WHY AMP? WHY THE BLOG?

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

Welcome to the official AMP blog! This is the space where we share all the insights and experiences of AMP. Here you can find advice on professionalism, involvement, branding and more. The blog serves as a way to showcase the unique voices of our members with a Gen Z twist. We’ll be sharing highlights from our guest speakers, what our mentors and mentees are learning throughout the year and so much more. So, let’s get down to the details.

First, here’s a little background.

The Association for Media Professionals (AMP) was launched in Spring 2018 for University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communication students. AMP aims to create media professionals through meaningful mentorships. We are the first organization at the CJC that focuses on building relationships between the diverse students majoring in telecommunication, public relations, journalism and advertising. Along with providing a professional and safe environment for mentors and mentees, AMP has three pillars that we focus on throughout the year: professionalism, involvement and branding.

Why should I join the Association for Media Professionals?

If you are someone who is looking for mentorship or looking to mentor, AMP is the perfect opportunity for you! AMP allows you to gain valuable experience in networking, involvement, personal branding and professionalism.

How do I join the Association for Media Professionals?

At the beginning of each fall semester, AMP opens applications. The application allows students to apply as either a mentor or mentee. Upperclassmen and those with communications/media experience are encouraged to apply for a mentor position. Applications and deadlines are posted on our social media pages during the recruitment period. You can also meet us in person at the annual CJC Involvement Fair held in the fall!

After applications are reviewed, selected applicants are interviewed by our executive board. Here at AMP, we cannot operate without our members, and we look forward to new applicants who are passionate about media and driven to enhance their networks, skills and professionalism.

What is the member experience?

As you browse through our website, you will see more information about who we are, why you should join and how to join. But, here’s some insight into three of our members’ experiences in AMP.

“Through AMP, I have gained valuable advice and most importantly friendships with so many fellow creatives and communicators. The advice I’ve received from industry professionals and alumni has been invaluable and has helped me grow as an individual. Serving as a mentor, I have had the honor to put my helping heart to good use and be a rock for others, while growing as a student leader. AMP has helped me become so much more confident in my abilities as a communicator and leader.” - Sarah Pickett, 3rd-year journalism major, mentor

“When I first came to the University of Florida, I had no idea what I was doing or whether or not I was on the right track to become a successful public relations practitioner. I didn’t know which classes would be best for my type of learning, or if it was even the right class for me. AMP allowed me to ask for advice from my peers and my mentor, and I got to hear about their hands-on experience. The chance to build friendships with CJC students who are also interested in communications was a valuable experience that I would not have had the opportunity to do without AMP.” - Dalena Nguyen, 3rd-year public relations major, mentor.

“Let’s just say college is intimidating. As a freshman, I spent a majority of my time cooped up in my dorm doing homework and studying. I was so uncertain about my future and what path I should take. During my sophomore year, I applied for AMP, and I’ll never forget the day of my interview; I woke up late, rushed to the CJC and forgot my resume. However, my interviewers were so understanding and welcoming. That sense of acceptance has been implemented in my experiences with AMP. Through AMP, I was able to step out of my comfort zone to change my major from journalism to public relations. Without their advice and knowledge, I would not have taken the initiative to alter my career path. That is exactly what AMP is: An environment where passionate individuals look out for each other and grow together.” - Rachel Ray, 2nd-year public relations major, mentee
